The following is a helpful guideline in determining if your patient would benefit from a sleep consultation with our sleep specialist or a direct referral for an overnight polysomnogram.
Patients who may benefit from a sleep consultation or polysomnography:
- Patients who complain of excessive and inappropriate daytime sleepiness
- Patients who have been made aware that they consistently snore
- Patients who complain of awakening gasping for breath
- Patients who have been made aware that they stop breathing in their sleep
- Patients who have been made aware that they have frequent limb movements during sleep
- Patients who complain of sudden weakness triggered by laughter or emotion
- Patients who presented nocturnal hypoxemia while on pulse oximetry during sleep in the hospital or home
- Patients who complain of difficulty falling or remaining asleep
Epworth Scale:
Epworth Sleepiness Scale is one of the most widely used subjective methods of assessing sleepiness. It is a short questionnaire in which a patient rates how likely they are to fall asleep in 8 specific circumstances. The Epworth scale is used to assess the probability of falling asleep rather than merely rating specific feelings or symptoms of sleepiness.
